They fled the Circle in Starkhaven, which burned to the ground recently, and escaped mid-transfer to Kirkwall. Talk to Ser Thrask near the entrance to the Runaway's Cavern, who informs Hawke of some apostate mages within. Travel to the Wounded Coast Approach and defeat the dragonlings who occupy the initial section (if you have not fought their kind yet, they are vulnerable to cold damage). you did not talk to him during the Wayward Son quest.
